Fifty years of a family
pastry shop, told in layers
PROJECT
In 2025, Pasticceria Bronzetti, a family-run artisanal pastry shop in Lavis, celebrated fifty years in business. To mark the milestone, the family commissioned Mercurio Studio to design Cinquanta, a limited edition of 500 numbered copies that brings together a family memoir, a recipe book and a travel diary. Mercurio oversaw the project from archival research to editorial concept and print production, creating a visual and narrative tribute to the family and its pastry-making tradition.
CONCEPT
The book is built around the idea of layers. As in an artisanal cake, each layer tells a unique story while contributing to the whole. Images, texts, recipes, quotes and calligraphic marks overlap in an affective montage, where time does not unfold in a straight line but settles, page after page, like cream, pastry or glaze. Of the two directions explored – a collectible “prestige” edition and a more “authentic” one – the project embraced the latter: a book that feels like a family notebook, where imperfections become part of its value.
STRUCTURE
The dedication opens the book, followed by a preface by Piermario De Angelis and the table of contents. The book unfolds across nine chapters, tracing the story from its beginnings in 1975 to the anniversary cake, through recipes, travel notes and family interviews. Each chapter opens with a full-bleed archival photograph and a single question that introduces its voice. Original handwritten recipes sit alongside contemporary photography, while Gianluca Bronzetti’s travels become postcards from seven destinations.
EDITORIAL PROJECT
The 16 × 16 cm format gives the book an intimate feel, inviting it to be held like a box of pastries. Its 112 pages are printed in four-colour offset on Fedrigoni Freelife Vellum Ivory, an uncoated paper that recalls the tactile quality of a recipe notebook passed down through generations, and sewn with an ivory thread. The flexible cover in Fedrigoni Materica Quarz is wrapped in a powder-blue dust jacket in Fedrigoni Materica Acqua, screen-printed in a single colour and finished with a gloss UV coating. Through these material and design choices, the book retains the warmth of a family album while gaining the rigour of a designed object.
A THANK-YOU
The book is part of a wider anniversary project that includes a celebratory logo, packaging design and an image film, also titled Cinquanta: a thank you to those who were there, those who are part of Pasticceria Bronzetti’s life today, and those who will carry its story forward.
